Most of us spend our lives in the urban man made world. In our day to day busy schedule sometimes even forget about the cosmic, vibrant natural world you can enjoy directly if you go hiking. Some of us may be lucky enough to be close to the nature that we can cover relatively short distance to step backwards and experience the natural world before the human hand changed it.
You can decide to either rough it out on your own or go on planned hiking expeditions with guides particularly in unfamiliar territory, it is always better to take some one along who is familiar with the area, understands the local wild life and can safely take you back to civilization irrespective to the level of your expertise or lack of it. Are you comfortable with the hiking terrain? Or you want to be adventurous and explore unknown terrain. These things are essential, and your security depends on being alert.
You can go on short hikes starting and ending at your vehicle and end your day in your own comfortable bed. Hiking can also be difficult, extended for a couple of days, needing camping and eating on track. Such type of hikes needs proper planning and you need to be harshly aware of your capabilities.

Remember never be over adventurous and plan a wide ranging hikes alone. * Decide who will bring what, to avoid duplication of two people carrying same gear

*In case you have not been on hiking trip, it’s a good idea to go for a few walks wearing your boots. It’ll help you break your feet – and avoid blisters on the track.

For those of you who enjoy the outdoors, Colorado has much to offer. There are many wonderful hiking trails throughout the state. Bald Mountain Scenic Area – Pine to Peak Loop Trail

Pine to Peak Trail is a 1 mile loop trail that is a great first hike for younger children. Hiking to the 7,160 foot summit of Bald Mountain, you will find a magnificent view and a variety of wildflowers. The trail starts off with a slight incline. After the trail splits, stay to the right and follow the Pines to Peak Trail. Bald Mountain Scenic Area is located 5 miles west of Boulder on the south side of Sunshine Canyon Drive (County Road 52).

Betasso Preserve Canyon Loop Trail

This hiking trail is a 2.8 mile loop that starts out with an easy climb, and then becomes a little more vigorous. The trail offers many different scenic views, and includes dense forest, fields, and meadows. This area was homesteaded around 1912, and later became a cattle ranch operated by the Betasso family. It is now part of the Boulder County Mountain Parks and Open Space system. To reach the trailhead take Boulder Canyon(CO 119) west for 6 miles, then go right on Sugarloaf Road for one mile to the trailhead.

Bobolink Trail

This trail is located in a parks and open space area of Boulder. It travels along South Boulder Creek, and is a flat, easy trail that is sport chair accessible. This area affords seasonal viewing (mid-May through Summer) of the bobolink for which the trailhead was named, along with other ground nesting birds. This hiking trail is located just west of the intersection of Baseline and Cherryvale Roads, and there is a parking lot on the southwest corner of the intersection.

Enchanted Mesa McClintock Trail Loop

This loop trail is approximately 1.8 miles in length and offers breathtaking views of the Flatiron Mountains. This easily accessible loop trail treats hikers to a beautiful pine forest, bustling song birds and squirrels. Along this hiking trail there is a gain in elevation of about 1,100 feet. The trail is located on the southside of the Chautauqua Auditorium, near Chautauqua Park (Grant and Baseline Streets in Boulder).

Lichen Loop Trail

This is an easy hiking trail that starts out at an elevation of around 5,900 feet and climbs only about 250 feet. The round-trip length is approximately 1.3 miles and provides beautiful views to the south of Boulder’s Front Range. To reach the trailhead take US 36 from Boulder and head north for 4.7 miles to Left Hand Canyon Drive. Turn left onto Left Hand Canyon Drive and travel 0.7 miles to Geer Canyon Road. You will see the Heil Valley Ranch sign and take a right onto Geer Canyon Road. Travel through private property 1.3 miles to the trailhead. Geer Canyon Road is a private road so do not park your car along the side of the road.

Rattlesnake Gulch Trail

This hiking trail is moderate in difficulty and takes approximately 2 hours to hike. The trail is about 3.6 miles round-trip, and begins at the entrance to Eldorado Canyon State Park, a world renowned rock climbing area. The trail makes its way up the southern flank of Eldorado Mountain, crossing a small stream on its way up to the ruins of the historic Crags Hotel. Built in 1908, the hotel was accessed via an inclined railway from the canyon floor, and burned down in 1913. To get to Eldorado Canyon State Park follow Broadway (93) South to Eldorado Canyon Road (CO 170) where you will turn right and follow this road all the way into the park. There is a small park fee upon entrance and a visitors center.

I like to hike as often as I can so it is important that I have the right hiking boots on my feet so I can go whereever anytime I want without worrying about my feet getting sore. However, there is more to buying hiking boots than going to the store and buying what looks best on the rack.


Regardless of where or how often you plan to go hiking, having the best hiking boots you can find can make a difference in your safety and comfort. When you go to the sports store in search of boots, you will need to have in mind the type of hiking you plan to be doing.


There are different boots made for walking on smooth trails, for climbing mountain trails, and for climbing steep trails over tough terrain. Mountain Hiking Tips

Backpacking is a fun and refreshing activity that can be fun for the whole family.You may be near the Mountains or in your back yard! No matter where you are it can be a great experience. You may be a photographer, a nature love, or just trying to get away from busy hectic city life for a while. Backpacking is a hobby (sport) that can be awesome for anyone.

There is no greater place to get connected to earth more than taking an inspiring hike in the hills. My favorite place to hike is the Smoky Mountains.There are places to hike in every state and it is pretty easy to find info on-line these days. Not only is hiking fun and refreshing it is also very good for you. I admit hiking can be very tough on your legs and back and I have almost not made a few of my hikes. So always be prepared and try to get into shape before you take on to big of a trail! Be sure to stretch before you go and take break often.

There are two types of backpacks, external and internal framed. Each pack has its own advantages and disadvantages. The internal frame is great for hiking through heavy vegetation because it is protected from being snagged.

A lot of people think that the external frame sits more comfortable on the back. It honestly really depends on how you built though. One thing that an external frame will do is trap more heat and sweat when your hiking.

The external frames are wider and allow for more space to hold things! They also sit further off the back giving more room for breathing, that’ll keep you cool. I always carry just a regular tech pack and I love the way it sits and feels!

It will soon be the perfect time to get into woods and watch nature bloom once again. Just watch those hungry waking beers! So grab you a new pack and reserve a cabin before they get sold out and head to the woods!.

Here are some are some great Hiking tips for you!

1. Try not to carry very much weight. Not only will it Hurt you and wear you out, it is dangerous. Try to find clothes that are light and will dry fast also! Try to stay away from cottons and try to wear Poly-prop or something like it.It is super light and dries out very quick. The best thing to do is go buy the lightest gear that you can get. When you are hiking always put the heavier weight up toward the top so that it balances out more! Be sure to carry enough to stay warm. I always carry a cotton top that doubles as a my pillow!

2. Carry a little med kit with you and be sure to carry a lightweight knife also. A multi-tool knife is the ticket. Also carry some fishing string and a hook if you are on a deep mountain hike. Nothing like fresh mountain fish over the fire.

3. Carry your water in the lightest thing you can. I prefer bottled water and there are a few companies making very light bottles for conserving the environment. You need to also carry a good amount of dried food. I like to go to Wally World and get the dried Fruit packs. They are full of Energy and don’t weigh very much.

4. Keeping you gear dry can be tough to do if you are on a long hike. I have heard of a few things that can be done to help keep the wet out. I have heard of lining the pack with plastic. It works ok but not the best solution. I knew this one guy that used Wax. He melted it all over his pack and said it worked great! I guess if you have an old pack or you think the purpose is more important than looks. They also sell some different kind of sealants that work great!

5. For cooking there are some great products out now that get the job done fast and easy! It is always safer not to build a fire if you don’t have to. But if you do here are a few tips. Bring Matches as well a lighter. You should not have a problem finding dry wood and leaves if you look in the right places. Try to find a cave or overhang if thing are wet. It really is hard to get wet wood going. What I always do is build a little pyramid around the fire with the wet wood; the heat dries it out over time. Remember to put out your fire completely before you leave you site! If you can’t find water rake a lot of dirt and cover it as well as you can.

6. Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather. When it is very cold out it is essential to wear headgear. It will save you life! Most body heat is lost through the head, so keep it warm.

7. Be sure to wear some ankle supporting boots! Finding the right boot can be tricky. You want to make sure your foot fits nice and snug and not have too much room to play. I bought some waterproof boots awhile back and discovered that they were waterproof both ways. They didn’t breath at all, but they do keep the water out! So there is a fine balance in finding the right boot.

8. Always carry a map and compass they can save you life! A GPS device is great to carry and a cell phone as well. They make some great waterproof cases at Wally world very cheap. Be sure to study the area that you are going so you know what you are expecting. I have been hiking in the Smoky Mountains and was overwhelmed by how many miles of trees there were and how they all looked the same.

9. Always hike with someone else! Never hike alone and if you do let someone know where you’re hiking and when you’re coming back!

10. Carry some Parachute Cord! It can used for a few different things! Use it to dry your clothes or make a shelter with it!

11. Change you batteries in your flashlight! Go with the Lithium AA batteries! They weigh half as much than an alkaline and last about three times longer!

12. Instead of carrying any kind of Soda or sugar drinks switch over to some kind of pack that you mix with water! There are all kinds of great natural alternatives out there!

13. Get lost in the woods? Know where you are going before you get there! If dark fall on you it is best to find a cave or natural shelter build a fire and plan to camp! Wondering in the woods at night isn’t suggested! You may fall in a cave or off a cliff. Just wait to daybreak unless you got a full moon with plenty of light. Pretend to be an Indian! You are not lost it is the teepee that is lost. The next day if you can’t figure where you are at, try to find higher ground and see if you can a visual of the area! If you are very lost and have no idea where you went wrong? Find a creek and hike beside the creek going downhill. The odds of seeing people will greatly be increased! Plus you are near a food and water source! Keep that fire burning and stay dry! You may also try the a SOS signal with your fire! Smoke has save many lives! Since there are a good number of hiking trails to choose from around the United States, consider the level of difficulty at which you are comfortable. Some hiking trails are suited for beginners while the more advanced hikers can choose from among trails with a higher degree of difficulty to go with their experience.

Once you have decided on the hiking track you want, try to get a copy of its map and carefully scrutinize the trail and its features. Being closely familiar with the trail even before you venture into it will keep you safe and alert at every step of your way and guide you out of possible emergency cases. Bringing the same map when you are finally on the hiking trail will also help you cope with any untoward incident like getting yourself hurt or suddenly sick, getting confused or lost in the middle of the actual hike, or any eventuality that may warrant the need for your getting back to safety quickly.

Getting familiarized with security personnel in the hiking area or park is also one important consideration. Ask for their contact information and make sure you have a cell phone to bring along during the trail hike. These preparations will make any possible problem like accidents or getting lost in the hiking area easier to report. It will facilitate sending security assistance to your site whenever the need for it becomes necessary. If in case you do not have a cell phone, try looking for a cheap prepaid handset. There should always be one available or you may consider borrowing from someone who has.

And while a cell phone is important for having a safe hiking adventure, bringing enough food and drinks to last you from one to two days is also important. Having enough food and drinks with you in case something goes wrong during the hike can help you retain your strength, keep you nourished and alert until you get to untangle yourself from any problem or before outside help reaches you. So pack extra food and drinks before you take the first step on the trail.

Another important thing to keep in mind is to have all the necessary hiking gear or supplies with you. Dressing right and safe for your adventure is a must lest you make yourself uncomfortable, unsafe and eventually risk spoiling the excitement and fun of your hiking adventure. Wearing hiking boots or sneakers should be first on this list. Then bring a light coat to keep you comfortable in case it rains or you stay for a cold night. Speaking of rain, examine the weather before you venture outdoors. Prior knowledge of the weather can guide and keep you safe.

The last, but could very well be the most important thing to remember to keep yourself safe is to disclose to your friends and immediate relatives where and when you will be doing your adventure, with whom, if ever you have someone else with you, and when you expect to return home.

Having a broad idea of where you are on any given day until your are safely back home will guide your folks where to locate you in case something unwanted happens. Writing down and leaving a similar information on a piece of paper or notebook at home will also be useful.
